1. Use the BYU-BNC website, select one "macro" registers (e.g. spoken or academic) and one "micro" register within that register (e.g. poetry or sermons or engineering).

2. Compare:

2A. The macro register against either 1) all other registers or 2) one other macro register (let me know which of these two you choose)

2B. The micro registers and the macro register in which it is a part (e.g. sermons vs. spoken)

Compare the following features:

3. (Grammar) Frequency of parts of speech -- noun, verb, adjective, adverb, negation, pronoun. (Note: Use CHARTS)

4. (Lexical) Nouns, lexical verbs, adjectives (Which appear in one but not the other?  Give top five or so for each category). (Note: Use TABLES)

5. (Semantic) The uses of a specific noun, verb, and adjective.
(Note: Use CONTEXT.  Look for words that appear more in one register than another.  This may give hints to how the word is being used differently in each register)
