Born 1872 in Portage, UT. Childhood in Portage Valley (near Indian reservation) spent herding sheep and cattle. Had only one year of formal school. Baptized at age thirteen. Married at age 22 in 1894; sealed as a family in 1903 in the Logan Temple. Very meager life during early married life; worked at several odd jobs in different places: herding and shearing sheep out in the western desert, thresher, planting posts, working at sawmill, mail carrier, etc. To Plain City in 1904. Was a farmer most of the year, and worked as a sheepherder in the winters. Also worked for other farmers shoeing horses and working in the sugar beet fields, as well as many other odd jobs. Lived in old, ramshackle house south of town 1907-36. Seemed to do OK in 1920s, in spite of Utah agricultural depression. Bought first car in 1925. To El Monte, CA in 1936 to live next to son Joe. Returned to Utah in 1938 to help on of his children on their farm. Died in 1939 at age 67 in Ogden. Buried in Plain City, UT. Known as a strong disciplinarian of his children. Active Seventy, choir member, active in genealogy, Sunday school teacher. Among appearance and personality traits: "bald, sober, hard working, strict disciplinarian, loved to sing loud, booming songs (sometimes in Welsh)"
