76: Ira RICE, 1793 MA-1868 UT (SPOUSE:   77: Minerva SAXTON, 1796 WALES-1824 NY

Born 1793 At New Ashford, MA. Became an orphan early in life. Fought 18 months in the War of 1812; in battle where he was only one of 200 known to have survived. Married at age 20 in 1814. Wife died in 1824, leaving three living children. Remarried. To Michigan by 1830, using land grants given to War of 1812 veterans. Substantial property and holding. Baptized and to Nauvoo by about 1840, where owned much land also. Known throughout life as expert hunter, especially of grizzly bears. Endowed 1845. Left much property behind at Nauvoo. Helped move Orson Pratt and Lorenzo Snow to Winter Quarters, 1846. In Utah, moved to Farmington, then built first log cabin in North Ogden. Was the first bishop there. Married widow Ann Butler as plural wife in 1857. To Cache Valley by 1859. Went with son to help colonize Southern Utah at age 73. At one point, left homeless by floods. Never recovered from overexertion at this time. Two other wives. Died in 1868 at age 74 in Washington, UT.
