Born 1819 at Mantua, Portage, OH. As early as 1833, some of his family joined the Church in Ohio, being converted and baptized by Orson Hyde. He moved to Nauvoo 1841-42. Ordained president of 4th Quorum of Seventies in 1845. Sealed in the Nauvoo Temple at age 25 in 1846. Moved west into Iowa with the Saints in 1846. Good friend of apostle Erastus Snow; took care of his family several times when Bro. Snow was gone for extended periods, such as April-October 1847 when Bro. Snow went to Salt Lake and back. Also raised oxen for Brigham Young and others at Winter Quarters 1846-1852. To Utah 1852. A few weeks after arriving, called to settle Sanpete County, where there had been Indian troubles. To Manti in 1852 and Ephraim in 1854. Called as Bishop in Ephraim in 1859. A friend to the Indians, once took an orphan Indian child into his home. Had three plural wives, one of whom had children by him. Suffered from cancer of the face for a while before dying in 1867 at age 48 in Ephraim, UT.
