Born 1813 at Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. Emigrated to America as a young man and settled in Pottsville, PA. Baptized 1842 in Pennsylvania. Six month voyage to San Francisco on the Brooklyn with wife and three children in 1846. In San Francisco, first counselor to Sam Brannan, on first city council, and worked as carpenter on some of first homes in that city. Accumulated much gold in CA gold fields. To Utah by ox 1849. Gave nearly all gold to Church. In several of the very early musical and drama groups, such as the Nauvoo Legion Band and the Deseret Brass Band (played clarinet). Endowed 1851. Married plural wife Zelnora Snow in 1851. Mission in England 1852-55. Brought home mother from Scotland to Utah, as well as Margaret Lochhead, who later became his plural wife. Resident of Farmington from 1853 until death. Was a farmer. Always active in Church. Member of Seventy Quorum. Author of 28 page book re. his experiences with Brannan in 1840s California. Died in 1892 at age 78 in Farmington, UT.
