Born 1829 at Ringsaker, Hedemarken, Norway. Little formal education, because he lived in a rural area. Worked on parents' small farm. Emigrated to the US in 1848 at the age of nineteen, and settled in Wisconsin. With news of the California Gold Rush, headed for California in 1852. Stopped in Salt Lake City, where he met some Norwegian members of the Church and heard the preaching of Orson Pratt. Converted to the gospel and baptized in 1852. Married at age 25 in 1854. Before leaving Salt Lake, called to go and meet Johnston's army in Echo Canyon. Moved to Lehi in 1858, where he was one of the pioneer builders of the community. Rock and brick mason by trade, but lack of work in that field led to raising flax, hemp and broom corn to make rope, rough linen, and brooms. Filled a mission to Norway 1870-72. Arrested by the authorities for baptizing. Filled another mission to Wisconsin and Minnesota 1882-83. In 1888, arrested for living in polygamy and spent two months in the state penitentiary. In later years, lived with his younger, second wife Hannah. For many years, president of the Scandinavians of Lehi. Filled many positions in the Church. Died in 1908 at age 79 in Lehi, UT.
