CONVERSATIONAL ANALYSIS 1: GENERAL

  • Find a video on the web, which contains good "back and forth" arguing or discussion between two or more people. DON'T simply get a "talking head", or Person X asking polite questions to Person Y, who gives 40-50 second responses.
  • Give the name of the program, when it aired, who was speaking, and what the topic was.

  • INCLUDE THE URL as well, or at least instructions on how you got there (e.g. FoxNews.com, then videos, then search for "yyy", then fourth link). But direct URLs are best. No instructions on how to get there, no points.

Answer the following questions. Give two or three bulleted points or examples for each one:

  1. What is the overall organization of the conversation?

  2. How do speakers display understanding of the last speaker's turn?

  3. How do speakers manage agreement and disagreement?

  4. How do speakers move from one topic to another?

  5. How do speakers "repair" their own utterances or those of someone else?

  6. What role do non-lexical (or quasi-lexical) items like uhm, mm hm, etc -- as well as non-verbal cues -- play in the conversation?
